Grameenphone takes Bangladesh Technology Excellence Awards 2024 for MyGP app
The app empowers the mass population across all sectors in Bangladesh as it digitises 99% of the company’s services.
Telecommunications company Grameenphone brought home the Bangladesh Technology Excellence Award 2024 in the Digital - Telecommunications category for its mobile app MyGP, which has revolutionised digital services in the country.
Installed on over 30 million smartphones, MyGP app empowers the mass population across all sectors in Bangladesh, digitising 99% of Grameenphone’s services, from streaming sports content to seamless one-tap payments and distributing trending content from local and global over-the-top (OTT) platforms.
Grameenphone has also partnered with top mobile financial services and payment gateways in providing emergency balance through MyGP if a customer’s account lacks funds. The funds are sourced from the customer’s mobile wallet with a single click. For those without a wallet, the company can create one directly from the app. Users can even use the app and complete transactions without interruption, even if they do not have any data balance.
MyGP has also stepped up to provide live streaming of classes during the pandemic, ensuring that students did not miss out on their education. Moreover, it has offered live scorecards and has broadcasted major sporting events like the Cricket World Cup, tournaments and football matches. These streaming capabilities have made MyGP a go-to platform for education and entertainment with over 10 OTT partners.
Meanwhile, the company has formed strategic partnerships with five software firms, creating a scalable, on-demand technical resource model in order to uplift and modernise the software development capacity. This hybrid approach retains critical knowledge in-house whilst leveraging external expertise.
Grameenphone has also implemented a microservice-based, cloud-native architecture on the app for scalability, flexibility, and resilience. This approach ensures that the application remains loosely coupled, allowing for easy updates and maintenance.
This robust technological foundation has enabled MyGP to handle 8,000 transactions per second and serve over five million daily active users. It now boasts 20 million monthly active users, with top ratings in app stores.
“MyGP sets new standards in user experience, service delivery, and technological advancement. Continuous improvements and a strong customer focus ensure that MyGP remains the best app in Bangladesh, improving every day,” the company said.
Currently, Grameenphone has developed the app’s latest version — MyGP 5.0. This major upgrade brings a robust information architecture, making feature discoverability instantaneous. Usability testing with hundreds of customers has resulted in over 30 iterations, leading to a 20-fold increase in customer interaction post-launch. The company has also recorded a 64% YoY revenue growth amidst the app’s significant impact.
