Inno Precast innovates slab production method with low-carbon, pre-stressed hybrid slab
The groundbreaking method combines the benefits of solid and hollow core slabs and reduces CO2 emissions.
Precast reinforcement concrete slab is widely utilised in residential structures for the construction of floors owing to their durability and minimal maintenance requirements. The production of slabs involves the combination of various elements, including steel, sand, cement, and gravel.
However, traditional slab production methods result in the generation of waste materials, such as scrap steel, moulds, and CO2 emissions, which have a detrimental impact on the environment. For every ton of cement produced, around one ton of CO2 emissions is generated.
Inno Precast, a leading precast concrete manufacturer, recognises the adverse effects of traditional slab production on the environment, society, and governance (ESG). As such, it has initiated a new production technology known as the “Low-Carbon Pre-Stressed Hybrid Slab,” which combines a special concrete formula, a solid slab, a hollow core slab, a pre-stressed steel strand, and emitted CO2 reduction technology.
The Low-Carbon Pre-Stressed Hybrid Slab is based on its concrete mixing formula, along with the use of Carbon Cure technology to inject collected CO2 from local industry emitters into the concrete mix during the production process. This process not only captures CO2, but also chemically converts the gas into a mineral that enhances the mechanical properties of its concrete, leading to a reduced cement consumption by 4% to 6%.
Concrete is then poured into a mould along with a pre-stressed steel strand, adding compressive force to the concrete laterally. This method allows for up to 75% less steel strands being required during production as compared to conventional precast reinforcement concrete slab production. This has also reduced concrete consumption by 21%.
The hybrid slab is produced entirely in an automated factory with strict quality control and standards, ensuring that products are consistent in quality for every single one made. At the same time, it eliminates the need for onsite casting of individual parts of the structure, which not only reduces construction time but also the waste from onsite cast production.
Utilising the Low-Carbon Pre-Stressed Hybrid Slab has reduced CO2 emissions by a total of 27,045 tons over two years and constructed green residences totalling over 13,000 units, which is equivalent to planting 2.7 million trees.
The success of the initiative has enabled Inno Precast to successfully obtain the Carbon Footprint for Product certification for its precast slab, as well as Carbon Footprint Reduction certification for solid and hollow core slabs to emphasise its dedication to reducing CO2 emissions.
This strong performance and industry innovation earned the company the Thailand Technology Excellence Awards in the ESG Tech - Residential Building Construction category.
“Inno Precast is proud to be a leading company dedicated to sustainable practices. We aim to reduce the negative impact of residential construction on the environment, society, and governance and to become a trailblazer in sustainable construction practices that align with ESG principles,” the company said.
